What stands out
- On chain hotels (Marriott, B&B, APA, Days Inn, ASAI), the two sites match within $3 or are exactly equal — rate parity in action.
- On independent European boutiques (LAFAYETTE Paris, The Z Holborn, Princesse Caroline), the spread blows out to 19–38%. The direction of the spread isn't consistent: Booking wins LAFAYETTE big, Expedia wins Princesse Caroline big.
- If you only check one site for an independent hotel, you can easily overpay by $100+ on a 2-night stay.
Loyalty: One Key vs Genius
Expedia's One Key earns OneKeyCash you can redeem on a future stay. Booking's Genius applies an immediate discount on flagged stays. Genius is easier to value at checkout; One Key is more valuable if you book Expedia Group brands (including Hotels.com and Vrbo) regularly.
Methodology
- 16 hotels across Lisbon, Las Vegas-adjacent leisure cities, Paris, London, Tokyo, Bangkok, and Orlando
- Same room type, same check-in/out dates on both sites
- Prices captured the same day, in USD, signed-out
- Total stay price compared, not nightly rate
FAQ
Is Expedia cheaper than Booking.com?
In our 16 paired searches, Booking won more often (8 vs 3, with 5 ties). But the bigger insight is the size of the gaps on independent hotels — checking both is more valuable than picking a winner.
Are Expedia and Booking.com the same company?
No. Expedia Group owns Expedia, Hotels.com, Vrbo, and Hotwire. Booking Holdings owns Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, and Kayak.
Which has better cancellation policy?
Both offer free-cancellation rates on most properties. Booking.com's checkout UI tends to flag the policy more prominently. Always read the policy line on the specific rate, not the hotel as a whole.
